School of Culture and Society - Aarhus University

Aarhus University is a young, modern university established in 1928. It has grown to become a leading public research university with international reach covering the entire research spectrum. The university is consistently ranked as one of the world’s top universities. It was ranked number 65 in the 2018 Shanghai ranking and among the world’s 100 best universities in 17 out of 42 subjects in the latest 2018 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

AU has a long history of collaboration with Chinese institutions and researchers. AU is a founding member of the Nordic Centre at Fudan University as well as a member of the European Centre at Peking University. In addition to this AU has cooperation agreements with among others Peking University, Tsinghua University and the Harbin Institute of Technology.

Within Aarhus University the School of Culture and Society encompasses a range of strong research and degree programmes, which in dialogue with each other and with society work to develop innovative ways to solve issues of topical or perennial interest.

The school comprises a wide range of programmes of which China Studies is part. Contemporary China is studied and taught within the academic tradition of language-based area studies. The main concern is with Chinese society, culture and history in contemporary and twentieth century Chinese society with a particular research focus on Chinese socialization, foreign affairs, migration, intercultural studies, cultural production and language acquisition. A comprehensive study program - BA, MA, PhD - in China Studies with numerous possibilities of specializations and study opportunities in China is offered. The China Studies section closely cooperates in interdisciplinary research and teaching with the different sections of the Department of Global Studies.
